Traditional Laparoscopic Revision

At The N.E.W. Program, we offer corrective surgery to those patients who have had prior bariatric surgery with less than a satisfactory result. Often, we are able to offer an option between natural orifice surgery and laparoscopic corrective surgery; however, we will generally recommend a specific procedure depending on which method will be the safest and most effective.

Weight loss surgery has been performed since the 1950’s. Unlike the current procedures like the Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve and the Gastric Band, a number of operations performed in the past had only mild success or had a high incidence of severe complications. Examples of these include the jejunoileal bypass, the gastroplasty (or stomach stapling) and the loop gastric bypass (sometimes called a “mini” gastric bypass).

With the dramatic increase in popularity of bariatric surgery many patients are unfortunately having their surgery performed by under-trained or inexperienced surgeons, sometimes with poor results. For some of these surgeons, the decision to “get into” bariatric surgery is made due to high patient demand rather than through any real desire to treat and care for obese patients and without the extensive training required to develop true expertise in this field. Since it is difficult for the average person to determine if a bariatric surgeon is truly an expert (or if he simply has a good marketing campaign), some patients have decided to undergo one of these life-changing procedures and have subsequently suffered from either poor patient support or a technically poor result. Of course, it is also possible to get a poor result even when the operation is initially performed well.

At The N.E.W. Program, corrective surgery is used for patients whom we feel would benefit significantly from a surgical modification of their intestinal anatomy. The benefits may be an improvement in quality of life, improved weight loss, or treatment for malnutrition and other difficulties. Generally, we are able to perform these revisions and corrections using minimally invasive surgical techniques. We also offer our copyrighted LifeStyle Management Program and a specialized program called the Tune-up Program to help patients make the lifestyle changes they need to maximize their success, even years after having had their original surgery.

Very few centers have developed the comprehensive program and technical expertise needed to take patients with poor success after surgery and help them to achieve their original goals. The N.E.W. Program is capable of helping these patients finally realize their success. Each patient undergoes careful evaluation, a review of previous operative reports and a thorough education process. After this, an individualized plan is created to get these patients back on track.
