Karen Garner, MD

Dr. Karen Garner, MD, a board certified internal medicine specialist, joined The N.E.W. Program to focus her practice on bariatric surgery in June 2004. She previously had spent five years in private practice with a multispecialty medical group in Orange County. Here she gained experience in both the clinic and hospital setting.

Dr. Garner completed her undergraduate education at Stanford University, with a B.A.S. in biology and political science. She attended the University of Southern California Medical School, achieving top honors, including a membership in the exclusive medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and then went on to the Kennamer Fellowship at UCLA. This prestigious fellowship involves a full year of focus on the medical evaluation and management of high-risk surgical patients, making her uniquely qualified to assist the surgeons at The N.E.W. Program in maximizing their surgical safety and outcomes..

Patients with hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea and asthma are just a few of the diseases which she has experience medically optimizing prior to surgery. Dr. Garner has always felt that the doctor-patient therapeutic relationship was of paramount importance. At the N.E.W. program, she greatly enjoys fostering this relationship as she follows patients closely during their weight loss journey and towards their new life.
