Advanced Surgical Weight Loss Procedure
Dr. Brian Quebbemann is one of the original American surgeons involved with the FDA testing
of the LAP-BAND®, making The N.E.W. Program one of the most experienced
Lap-Band surgery centers in the United States.
Lap-Band surgery has been done by The N.E.W. Program surgeons since 2001,
and similar to the gastric sleeve, the Lap-Band System™ enables
you to feel full with smaller amounts of food.
The Lap-Band System™ (also called gastric banding or simply the Band)
has been documented to have the lowest complication rate at the time of
surgery. Our team uses a “scarless” technique to minimize
surgical incisions, rendering the aesthetic result of the surgery virtually
Other benefits of Lap-Band:
- Can be done as an outpatient procedure.
- Reversible, giving the patient more freedom
- Patients can fully digest all vitamins and minerals
- Single incision can be used in certain cases for minimal scarring
- Effective for patients with high BMI and lower amounts of excess weight
Understanding the LAP-BAND® Procedure
The LAP-BAND® procedure involves placement of a small, adjustable ring
over the upper stomach to decrease appetite. If patients are still struggling
to lose the desired amount of weight, fluid may be added and the band
can be tightened. This will give the patient a quicker sensation of feeling
full while eating.
If the band is too tight, the patient may experience difficulty eating
or heartburn. They can come in to have fluid removed so that it is loosened
and provides more comfort. Adjustments can be done in as little as five
minutes, making this procedure easily tailored to the patient’s
changing needs. When you come to the office, we will clean the skin above
the Lap-Band, port, then inject a small amount of saline into the port.
While it is virtually pain-free, a small amount of local anesthesia may
be used if the patient desires.
Weight Loss Expectations
While patients can eat regular food, they will need to thoroughly chew
their food and eat slowly. When patients carefully follow The N.E.W. Program’s
nutritional guides, they can lose between 1-2 pounds every week during
the first year. This can result in an average loss of 50% of a patient’s
excess weight—or more. The weight loss can take substantial time,
occurring over 2-3 years. Patients must follow recommended eating and
exercise patterns for optimal results.
How Many Adjustments Are Necessary Before I Start Losing Weight?
In some cases, patients can lose weight without any adjustments being made
to the band. Prior to making any adjustments to the Lap-Band, we ensure
that your body has fully healed. This means that the first adjustment
cannot be performed until 6 weeks following the initial surgery. In most
cases, 3-4 adjustments are needed in the first year to fine tune the band
for the patient, but this number can vary greatly depending on the individual.
